Orthopaedic Surgeon
Mr Theepan Balasubramaniam is an Australian Trained Orthopaedic Surgeon. Having grown up in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Theepan completed his high schooling at Melbourne High School before embarking on a career in Medicine.
His training as a junior medical doctor was through St Vincent’s Hospital and Monash Health. During this time he completed a Masters in Sports Medicine. Following acceptance onto the Australian Orthopaedic Association Training Program (Vic/Tas) he completed his advanced training throughout some of the region’s busiest hospitals. Upon successfully completing his fellowship examination through the Royal Australasian college of Surgeons, he undertook a fellowship in Trauma surgery through Western Health.
Theepan then spent a year travelling throughout North America further honing his surgical skills whilst being appointed a lecturer at Dalhousie University. He completed a foot and ankle fellowship under the supervision of internationally acclaimed surgeon Professor Mark Glazebrook, focusing on sports injuries, deformity correction and Ankle Replacement.
Theepan then completed a hip and knee arthroplasty fellowship world renowned surgeon Professor Michael Dunbar. He had a particular focus on complex primary as well as revision hip and Knee Replacements. Moreover, he was able to gain crucial experience with robotic surgery, a skill he is excited to bring to his patients back home.
Upon returning to Australia, Theepan has been employed as an orthopaedic surgeon at the Alfred Hospital; where he helps care for some of the states most challenging trauma patients, as well as having appointments at Eastern Health. Here he helps supervise and train the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons. Theepan is actively involved in research having numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and is currently the Research Secretary at Eastern Health.
